AGLP: The Association of LGBTQ+ Psychiatrists
About AGLP: The Association of LGBTQ+ Psychiatrists
Since its origins in the late 1960s, AGLP: The Association of LGBTQ+ Psychiatrists has served as a beacon of support and advocacy for LGBTQ+ mental health professionals in Philadelphia, PA and beyond. With over 40 years of dedicated service to the LGBTQ+ community, AGLP represents the oldest association of LGBTQ+ professionals in the United States. The organization was born from courage—when gay and lesbian psychiatrists met in secret at professional conferences, facing potential loss of licensure simply for their identity. Today, AGLP continues that legacy by creating a welcoming, safe, and nurturing environment where LGBTQ+ psychiatrists can thrive personally and professionally. The association fosters a fuller understanding of LGBTQ+ mental health issues through research, education, and advocacy initiatives that prioritize the well-being of both members and patients. AGLP's mission centers on four core commitments: advancing knowledge about LGBTQ+ mental health, advocating for the best possible care for the LGBTQ+ community, developing accessible resources that promote mental wellness, and providing valuable services that support member growth and development. Working both independently and in collaboration with the American Psychiatric Association, AGLP influences policies relevant to the LGBTQ+ community and maintains representation on important committees and caucuses. The organization's vision is to be recognized as the expert voice on LGBTQ+ mental health while remaining a nurturing community where all LGBTQ+ psychiatrists feel valued, supported, and empowered to advance their careers and contribute to better mental health outcomes for the communities they serve.
