About Alliance Francaise de Berkeley

Founded in 1962 by passionate East Bay women, Alliance Française de Berkeley has grown into a vibrant cultural hub serving francophiles and francophones of all ages throughout the Berkeley, CA community. As an independent, non-political, and non-discriminatory organization, we remain dedicated to our founding mission: promoting knowledge and appreciation of the French language and Francophone cultures while encouraging friendship and collaboration with the French-speaking world. Our journey reflects the resilience and commitment of our community—from humble beginnings holding French lectures in members' homes to establishing our permanent home in a Victorian house in 1994 after a successful grassroots fundraising campaign. Today, Alliance Française de Berkeley is part of a global network of more than 800 Alliance Française chapters, with 118 located across North America alone. We welcome American and French men and women who share a passion for language, culture, and cross-cultural understanding. Our welcoming community creates a space where members engage in social and educational events that celebrate Francophone traditions and foster meaningful connections. Rooted in Berkeley's rich cultural landscape and easily accessible via BART, Alliance Française de Berkeley continues to be a trusted destination for those seeking authentic French language learning and genuine community among fellow French language enthusiasts.
