About Alliance Francaise de Newport, RI
The Alliance Française de Newport has been active for more than 50 years and continues to be part of a worldwide organization that has been dedicated to the study of the French language and to promoting cultural exchange since the late 19th century. Locally the members participate in French classes, enjoy many different facets of French culture and raise money for academic scholarships given at Island High Schools and Salve Regina University. New members are always welcomed and encouraged.
Alliance Française de Newport is affiliated with the Fédération des Alliances Françaises that has nearly 1500 chapters located in 138 countries worldwide. Three members, including a French woman who took part in the French resistance during World War II, established the Newport chapter in 1953.
