American Italian Heritage Society

Founded in 1980 by seven dedicated individuals gathering around a dining room table, the American Italian Heritage Society has become a cornerstone of cultural preservation and family-centered community engagement in Omaha, Nebraska. What began as a grassroots effort to promote and research Italian culture has evolved into a vibrant organization serving over 1,000 members who share a passion for maintaining Italian heritage and traditions. At its core, the Society operates with a fundamental commitment to creating a family-oriented environment where children and adults alike can actively participate in learning about and celebrating their ethnic heritage. The organization believes strongly in intergenerational involvement, ensuring that younger members develop a deep appreciation for Italian customs, language, and traditions alongside their parents and grandparents. Beyond celebrations and social gatherings, the American Italian Heritage Society is actively working toward establishing a cultural museum and library in the Omaha area. Members have generously donated numerous historical photographs documenting early Italian communities in Omaha, along with cherished family keepsakes and mementos from historical Italian societies. These invaluable resources will eventually have a permanent home, allowing the community to preserve and share their collective history. The Society's commitment extends to encouraging members to embrace the Italian language and maintain connections to their roots through meaningful cultural experiences. Supported by dedicated volunteers and community contributions, the American Italian Heritage Society continues its mission of strengthening cultural identity and building lasting connections within the Omaha Italian-American community.
