Based in Phoenix, Arizona, the Arizona Black Bar is the successor to the Hayzel B. Daniels Bar Association, originally established in 1971 as the Arizona Black Lawyers Association. The organization carries forward a powerful legacy of civil rights advocacy and judicial leadership, having been renamed in 1993 to honor the Honorable Hayzel B. Daniels, Arizona's first African-American judge and a pioneering civil rights attorney. The Arizona Black Bar's mission centers on enhancing the professional lives of its members while furthering justice in Arizona through active court participation and collaboration with other bar associations. The organization recognizes its special duty to the public and works to elevate the public perception of African-American legal professionals throughout the state. With a statewide membership of law students and legal professionals from diverse sectors—private practice, municipal government, state agencies, tribal courts, and federal judiciary—the Arizona Black Bar creates a unified community of legal advocates. The organization's roots run deep in Arizona's fight for equality, tracing back to landmark school desegregation cases that preceded the U.S. Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision.
