About Association of Black Psychologists

The Association of Black Psychologists represents a powerful legacy of collective action and social justice that began in San Francisco in 1968, when more than 200 Black psychologists united to address systemic racism and advocate for their profession and communities. Today, this organization continues its transformative work from Fort Washington, MD, guided by a clear mission: the liberation of the African Mind, empowerment of the African Character, and enlivenment and illumination of the African Spirit. What began as a handful of concerned professionals has grown into an independent organization of over 1,400 members representing scholars, practitioners, students, artists, and activists dedicated to the well-being of people of African descent.

ABPsi was born from a commitment to self-determination and community-centered change. The founders recognized that Black psychologists possessed unique skills and perspectives essential for addressing problems facing Black communities—problems that mainstream psychology had long ignored. The organization operates exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, developing programs through which psychologists of African descent can assist in solving critical social problems while advancing African psychology as a discipline.

Today, ABPsi's community in Fort Washington, Maryland and beyond stands on the shoulders of its ancestors and elders, honoring their legacy while building a future rooted in justice and collective well-being. The organization offers mentoring through Jegnaship, healing circles, and professional development that strengthen both individual practitioners and communities. By centering African principles, values, and epistemologies, ABPsi continues its 56-year history of making a positive impact on African-Black mental health and creating meaningful dialogue among like-minded professionals committed to liberation, well-being, and joy for people of African descent globally.
