Founded in 1979 in Austin, TX, the Austin Black Lawyers Association emerged from the vision of fifteen African American attorneys who recognized the need for professional support and advocacy within their community. What began as a grassroots support group addressing critical issues of professional development and limited opportunities has evolved into a thriving organization representing hundreds of accomplished legal professionals throughout Austin and Central Texas. ABLA's members represent the full spectrum of the legal profession—from judges and legislators to partners in major law firms and solo practitioners—each contributing their expertise and commitment to the organization's mission. For nearly four decades, ABLA has stood at the forefront of Austin's legal landscape, driving meaningful change through leadership, dedication, and community service.
