Born from Dr. Mario Borja's vision to create a safe community space, the center emerged from the historic Bayanihan House—a former residential hotel that once provided affordable housing to Filipino American WWII veterans and immigrant families. After a devastating 1997 fire, the Filipino-American Development Foundation was established to preserve this community anchor, and through careful stewardship, secured a long-term lease to continue serving the neighborhood. Today, the center honors the struggles and resilience of Filipino immigrants while welcoming newly arrived families navigating similar challenges in an increasingly changing SOMA landscape. The organization strengthens community ties by bringing together immigrant families, seniors, and service providers who share resources and expertise.
