Join us for a powerful documentary screening that tells the story of Altadena's historic African American community and its fight to rebuild after the Eaton Fire.
About the Film
For generations, Altadena stood as a beacon of hope. While neighboring Pasadena enforced redlining policies that kept Black families from owning homes, Altadena welcomed them with open arms. Here, African American families could finally put down roots, build equity, and pass something meaningful to the next generation.
That legacy—decades in the making—now hangs in the balance.
Beneath the Ashes shares the voices of those who lived it: homeowners who lost everything, renters searching for stability, business owners rebuilding from scratch, and community leaders fighting to preserve what took generations to create. Through intimate conversations and powerful storytelling, the film reveals both the pain of loss and an inspiring vision for what comes next.

Project Passion was born from a deep commitment to serving our community. What started as a small group of dedicated individuals giving back through annual events has grown into a movement built on collaboration, connection, and impact. For over a decade, we have shown up for our community—whether through our Community Welcome Back Day, which celebrates our PUSD Students throughout the school year, Young Kings Retreat, which provides mentorship to young black and brown men in Northwest Pasadena, Back to School Festival, which has equipped thousands of students with supplies for the past 11 years, our annual toy giveaways bringing holiday joy to families, or our Dena Relief Drive, which provided essential support to those affected by the Eaton Fire. These acts of service were never just one-time efforts; they were part of a larger vision—one where people come together, not only in times of crisis but in everyday moments of need and opportunity. We saw firsthand the power of unity and realized that true change happens when passionate individuals and organizations work together. That realization sparked Project Passion, an organization dedicated to fostering collaboration and empowering communities. Our mission is to create spaces where individuals can unite, share resources, and collectively drive meaningful change. We believe that by working together, we can build a stronger, more inclusive community where every voice is valued, and every passion has the power to make an impact. Project Passion is more than just an organization—it’s a movement rooted in service, driven by collaboration, and committed to ensuring that no one in our community is left behind.
