Black Girls CODE
About Black Girls CODE
Based in Oakland, California, Black Girls CODE is a transformative movement dedicated to empowering Black girls, women, and gender-expansive youth to become leaders and innovators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. With an ambitious vision to train 1 million girls by 2040, the organization recognizes that radical action is essential to address the stark underrepresentation of Black women in tech—currently less than 2% of tech roles are held by Black women. Black Girls CODE builds pathways for young women of color to embrace the technology marketplace as builders and creators, fostering not just coding skills but community, confidence, and a deep sense of belonging. The organization's work begins early, sparking interest in elementary school and building momentum through high school, college, and into early career stages. What sets Black Girls CODE apart is their understanding that success in technology requires more than just technical knowledge—it requires mentorship, community support, and spaces where young people feel genuinely seen and valued. Through volunteer opportunities, community engagement, and partnerships with industry leaders, Black Girls CODE is reshaping who gets to code the future. The organization's impact extends beyond individual learners to address systemic inequities in the tech industry, working toward a vision where the next generation of technologists, engineers, and ethical AI leaders reflect the full diversity of our communities and drive innovation that serves everyone.
