About Brave Space Alliance
Brave Space Alliance stands as Chicago, IL's first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ+ Center, representing a groundbreaking commitment to community self-determination and liberation. Since its founding in 2017, a small group of brave individuals recognized the urgent need for an organization that would center and be led by trans and gender expansive people—a gap that remains largely unfilled in Chicago, particularly on the South Side. The organization operates from a foundation of four core pillars—Dignity of Health, Housing, Food, and Identity—recognizing that liberation requires addressing the whole person and their community. BSA's approach is rooted in mutual aid and community-sourced resources, believing that those most impacted by systemic oppression possess the wisdom and solutions needed for collective healing. More than just a service provider, Brave Space Alliance functions as a catalyst for empowerment and education, working intentionally to build toward the liberation of all oppressed peoples. The center welcomes all who come through its doors, creating affirming spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can access support, build community, and contribute their voices. By prioritizing leadership from Black and trans community members, Brave Space Alliance demonstrates a transformative model of what community-centered, culturally competent LGBTQ+ advocacy and support can look like in Chicago.
