About BU Latino Medical Student Association
The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) represents a student-led initiative at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine that honors the school's historic commitment to diversity and inclusion. Located in Boston, MA, this organization builds upon a legacy that dates back to 1873, when Boston University became a pioneer in coeducational medical education and has since produced the first Black female physician and the first Native American physician in the nation.
LMSA operates from a deep understanding that diversity of culture, race, gender, and perspectives is essential to excellence in medicine. The association creates a welcoming community space where Latino medical students can authentically share their backgrounds and experiences while building meaningful relationships with peers who understand their unique journeys in medical education. This sense of belonging strengthens student well-being and fosters a supportive environment that enhances the overall educational experience.
Beyond peer support, LMSA is committed to serving the Boston community by raising awareness about health disparities affecting Latino populations and creating pathways for students to engage in meaningful service work. The organization recognizes that medical education extends beyond the classroom and into the communities students serve. By facilitating language immersion opportunities and direct community engagement, LMSA ensures that future physicians develop the cultural awareness and linguistic skills necessary to provide respectful, compassionate care.
As part of the national LMSA network, the Boston chapter connects with peer organizations throughout the Northeast, creating a broader movement toward Latino health advocacy and inclusive medical education. This collaborative approach reflects the school's foundational philosophy that real-world solutions to health challenges emerge from diverse teams working together toward common goals.
