About Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California
Founded in San Francisco in 1934 by Californians of Portuguese ancestry, the Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California represents nearly a century of civic dedication and cultural preservation. The organization, which maintains a presence in Tulare, CA and across the state, was established to honor the legacy of João Rodrigues Cabrillo, the Portuguese explorer who discovered California on September 28, 1542. What began as a mission to recognize Portuguese contributions to California's history has evolved into a multifaceted community organization serving over 1,975 members through five statewide clubs. The Cabrillo Civic Clubs have successfully championed numerous historical recognitions, including the establishment of Cabrillo Day as a statewide observance, the creation of the Cabrillo National Monument at Point Loma, and the designation of State Highway 1 as the Cabrillo Highway. Beyond historical preservation, the organization has built a strong reputation for meaningful community service and support for Portuguese-American families. Members actively participate in charitable endeavors, scholarship programs for students of Portuguese descent, and cultural events that celebrate Portuguese customs and traditions.
