About Chabad GW
Since 1993, Chabad GW has served as a warm and vibrant center for Jewish students at The George Washington University in Washington, DC, grounded in the philosophy of Chabad-Lubavitch and its foundational principle of loving every Jew as oneself. Operating as a student-led organization sponsored by American Friends of Lubavitch, Chabad GW embodies a non-judgmental, welcoming approach that makes Jewish life accessible to all, regardless of background or prior experience.
The organization's mission reflects a deep commitment to community building and personal growth. Chabad GW functions as an open center for prayer and study, a partnership between students, faculty, and staff, and a vibrant community hub designed specifically with the GW Jewish student body in mind. The team, led by Rabbi Levi and Nechama Shemtov, intentionally creates programming that responds to student input and encourages personal involvement at whatever level feels comfortable.
What distinguishes Chabad GW is its holistic approach to Jewish student life. The organization recognizes that every individual has their own unique "Jewish spark" and something valuable to contribute to the community. Rather than imposing a single path, Chabad GW offers diverse opportunities—from signature Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations to Torah study, social events, and service initiatives—allowing students to explore and deepen their Jewish identity on their own terms.
Over its three-decade history, Chabad GW has become integral to the GW community, attracting hundreds of students to its programs annually. The organization serves undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, faculty, staff members, and Jewish interns, creating a multi-generational Jewish home away from home. By fostering meaningful connections to Jewish heritage and building a supportive community, Chabad GW empowers students to experience a Jewishly enriched college experience.
