About Consulate General of France in Los Angeles
In addition to the Embassy of France in Washington, DC, which is the headquarters of French diplomacy in the United States, there are ten Consulates General of France in major American cities, one being attached to the Embassy in Washington, DC.
Consular officials are responsible for protecting the interests of French nationals abroad, be they permanent residents or temporary visitors.
The consulate has a general role of information and animation of the French community ;
The consulate has a role in the protection of our expatriate or transient fellow citizens : social assistance, scholarships, assistance to French transients in difficulty, assistance to incarcerated French people, etc.
A Consul is at the same time a prefect, a mayor, a social worker and a notary, of which he exercises part of the prerogatives abroad. The consulate is the relay of the French administrations with the compatriots residing or passing through abroad who can thus maintain their links with the French administration.
The consulate facilitates the exercise of the rights of citizens expelled from France : civil status, issue of national identity cards and passports, notarial deeds, national service, registration on electoral rolls, voting for national elections, registration in the register French people established outside France,…
It is also up to the consulate to process visa applications from American citizens, when they plan to settle in our country, or from nationals of other nationalities for whom a visa to enter our territory is required.
