Czech Heritage Society of Texas Bexar County Chapter
About Czech Heritage Society of Texas Bexar County Chapter
Since 1982, the Czech Heritage Society of Texas Bexar County Chapter has served as a vital cultural institution for the Schertz and San Antonio communities, rooted in a deep commitment to preserving Czech and Slovak heritage. What began as a grassroots effort in 1978 by San Antonio Czechs evolved into a meaningful organization that initially provided crucial support to refugees fleeing communism in Czechoslovakia, offering language instruction, cultural guidance, and practical assistance during a critical period. Today, the Chapter continues this legacy of community support and cultural preservation through relationships that connect Czech and Slovak immigrants with their traditions and with one another. The organization creates welcoming spaces where community members can celebrate shared ancestry through social functions, educational programs, and cultural events that honor the customs, music, languages, and culinary traditions of the Czech people. The Chapter's work extends beyond its membership, actively engaging the broader Schertz and Bexar County population through heritage festivals, public celebrations, and educational partnerships with local schools and cultural institutions. By maintaining conversational Czech language classes, sponsoring scholarship opportunities for young community members, and supporting the Institute of Texan Cultures' Czech exhibits, the Chapter ensures that the contributions and traditions of Czech and Slovak immigrants remain recognized and celebrated. The organization welcomes new visitors and members who share an interest in learning about or celebrating Czech heritage, embodying a spirit of cultural pride and community connection that has defined the Chapter's mission for over four decades in the greater San Antonio area.
