DC: Jewish Reckoning with Power: A Halachic Left Learning Series
About DC: Jewish Reckoning with Power: A Halachic Left Learning Series
Join HL as we learn from Rabbi Avigayil Halpern, Prof. Sam Shuman, and Rabbi Amelia Wolf!
Come to our second event in Jewish Reckoning with Power: A Halachic Left Learning Series -- with future events planned in Los Angeles, Chicago, and NYC. Each event will be livestreamed/recorded in order to allow everyone to watch speakers in other cities.
About the series:
Much of our recent Torah, writing, and teaching has engaged directly with the urgent realities of Israel/Palestine. In this program, we are intentionally stepping back, toward a broader and more abstract question that underlies so many of those conversations: How does Jewish tradition understand, justify, resist, and reckon with power?
Each day of learning will feature shiurim from multiple teachers exploring different dimensions of Jewish engagement with power: textual, halachic, historical, and ethical. While the sessions will not all address the same sources or case studies, together they aim to open a shared conversation and provide conceptual tools that can deepen our Torah learning and inform contemporary Jewish moral and political thinking.
Light lunch and snacks will be served -- please RSVP so we can estimate how much to order!
*** We believe in learning Torah from all. Speaking does not imply agreement with Halachic Left's political positions. Institutional affiliations are for identification purposes only.
Shiur descriptions forthcoming!

Halachic Left
Halachic Left is a grassroots movement of halachically-observant Jews advocating for our communities to oppose Jewish supremacy, support ending the Israeli military control and occupation of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, and work for a just and equitable future for Israelis and Palestinians. We share a common experience of belonging to institutions where uncritical support for Israel is a nearly universal assumption, and our views are marginalized and ignored. We are united in our belief that we should not need to compromise on our values to be a part of religious communities. Halachic Left is a Diaspora organization working within observant communities to change the narrative on Israel and Palestine. Our commitment to halacha compels us to speak out against the right-wing voices twisting our traditions to their own ends. Similarly, we add Jewish religious voices to the American left, demonstrating that observant people can and do play a key role in progressive movements.
