Fountain of Youth Lodge #649

https://foy649.org/ 100 Washington Street

Located at 100 Washington Street in St. Augustine, Florida, the Elk Lodge Fountain of Youth #649 of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW) stands as a historic and pivotal institution in both the city's and the nation's civil rights history. Its legacy extends beyond being a social hub for African Americans; it played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement, serving as a meeting place for influential leaders, including Dr. Ralph Abernathy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., during their time in St. Augustine. Fountain of Youth Lodge #649 was founded in St. Augustine on Washington Street on Tuesday, February 2, 1926, at the Odd Fellows hall. The lodge building, located at 100 Washington Street, was dedicated on Sunday, February 22, 1959, with Exalted Ruler James Thomas and Daughter Ruler Ethel Carter presiding. Its name—Fountain of Youth—symbolically connects to the famous Fountain of Youth park in St. Augustine, believed by some to have rejuvenating powers, and the lodge played a similarly revitalizing role within its community. Lodge members were known for their philanthropic efforts, supporting local schools, providing scholarships, and aiding those in need within the African American community.
