Named after the Irish patriot Robert Emmet, the organization was formally incorporated in 1955 and held its first official function in March 1956—a dinner dance honoring the feast of Saint Patrick, a tradition that remains central to the association's annual calendar today. The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick operates as a community-oriented fraternal organization with a dual mission: to educate and preserve the history of Irish pioneers and their contributions to the development of the United States, Canada, and Ireland, while sponsoring cultural, charitable, and social service programs that benefit the broader New Bedford community.
