Rooted in Sherman Oaks, California, the Greek Heritage Society of Southern California represents a 40-year commitment to honoring and preserving the stories of Greek immigrants and their descendants. Founded in 1985, GHS emerged from a deep community conviction that the experiences, achievements, and cultural contributions of Greek Americans deserve recognition and documentation for generations to come.
At its heart, GHS believes in the power of shared stories and intergenerational connection. Through the FLOGA Project—where FLOGA represents the eternal flame passed from one generation to the next—the organization has built meaningful relationships with over 300 Greek immigrants and Greek Americans, capturing their personal histories, family photographs, and cultural treasures. These connections form the foundation of an extensive archive that belongs not just to researchers, but to the entire Greek American community in Southern California.
What sets GHS apart is its holistic approach to cultural preservation. Beyond collecting historical materials, the organization creates award-winning documentaries that bring these stories to life, develops educational materials that inspire younger generations to embrace their heritage, and facilitates workshops that strengthen community bonds. Operating in partnership with Loyola Marymount University, GHS maintains its commitment to being non-political and community-focused, working collaboratively with other cultural organizations to ensure that Greek heritage remains vibrant and accessible. For the Sherman Oaks area and Southern California broadly, GHS serves as a living bridge between past and future, ensuring that the Greek American experience is remembered, celebrated, and passed forward with pride.
