Hellenic Law Society of California
About Hellenic Law Society of California
Since its founding in 1985 as The Hellenic Law Society of Northern California, this organization has evolved into a statewide institution dedicated to preserving and fostering Hellenic principles within the legal profession. Incorporated in January 2022 as the Hellenic Law Society of California, Inc., the organization continues its four-decade legacy of building community and fellowship among legal professionals in San Francisco and across the state who share a commitment to Greek legal affairs, culture, and ancestry.
At its core, the Hellenic Law Society operates on three foundational principles: a commitment to individual liberty within an ordered society as reflected in the ancient Hellenic concept of democracy; a commitment to the rule of law as a mechanism of justice in civilized society; and a dedication to learning and free philosophical inquiry. These principles guide the organization's work in mentoring law students and novice attorneys, promoting ethical standards within the legal profession, and identifying qualified candidates for judicial appointments.
The Society's impact extends beyond professional development to meaningful community engagement. The organization bestows the prestigious Athenian Award to individuals who exemplify ancient Athenian ideals in contemporary society. Through decades of events—from weekend retreats and educational symposia to cultural celebrations and social gatherings—the Hellenic Law Society of California has created a vibrant network where legal professionals strengthen professional bonds while celebrating their shared Hellenic heritage and commitment to justice.
