About Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania

The Hispanic Bar Association of Pennsylvania (HBAPA) represents a unique chapter in Philadelphia, PA's legal history—a testament to the contributions and determination of Latino attorneys who transformed the local bar association landscape. Since its formal establishment in 1983, HBAPA has grown from a small committee of approximately 15 members meeting in a law firm conference room to a thriving professional organization with a legacy of producing distinguished judges, government officials, and community leaders.

At its core, HBAPA is built on a mission of social, economic, professional, and educational advancement for Latino and Hispanic attorneys, law students, and community members. The organization was born from the vision of pioneering Latino lawyers like Judge Nelson A. Diaz, the first Puerto Rican admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar, and Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte, the first Puerto Rican woman admitted to the bar, who recognized both the growing Spanish-speaking community's need for quality legal services and the absence of a dedicated forum for Hispanic legal professionals.

Today, HBAPA celebrates a remarkable roster of members who have achieved historic firsts—from judges and city solicitors to federal appointees and cabinet-level officials. The organization remains deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of Latino attorneys while fostering collaboration with other minority and affinity bars. Through sponsorship of the annual Legal Education Fund scholarship banquet, hosting mentorship receptions, and participating in judicial selection processes, HBAPA continues to strengthen the Philadelphia legal community. Members benefit from a large, supportive network of attorneys dedicated to promoting justice and advancing the interests of Hispanic communities across Pennsylvania.
