Founded in 1976 by a small group of visionary women attorneys in Houston, TX, the Houston Association of Women Attorneys (AWA) has evolved into a cornerstone organization dedicated to strengthening women's presence and influence in the legal community. What began as a grassroots effort to address the underrepresentation of women in judicial positions and law firm leadership has blossomed into a diverse membership encompassing judges, practicing attorneys, and law students from every sector of the profession. At its core, AWA is built on relationships and mutual support—values evident in its signature Judicial Reception, an annual tradition born from a candid 1980s dinner conversation between judges and attorneys that transformed into a celebrated networking event. The organization's membership spans solo practitioners, law firm associates and partners, in-house counsel, government attorneys, and aspiring lawyers, creating a unique professional family where members share experiences, seek guidance, and discover answers to common challenges. AWA members value the organization's role in providing mentorship for law students and recent graduates navigating their early careers, offering practical wisdom from experienced practitioners across all practice areas. Through monthly CLE-accredited meetings, annual receptions, and the AWA Foundation's scholarship and recognition programs, the organization continues its founding mission to create opportunities and celebrate the achievements of women in Houston's legal profession.
