About Idaho Japanese Association

Founded in 2008 by five dedicated volunteers, the Idaho Japanese Association has grown into a vibrant community organization serving over 700 members in Boise, ID and the greater Treasure Valley. The organization was officially registered as a non-profit corporation with the State of Idaho in March 2009 and continues to strengthen connections between Japanese nationals and local residents through meaningful cultural exchange. At its heart, the IJA is driven by a dual mission: to improve communication among Japanese people living in Idaho while simultaneously fostering dialogue with local community members interested in Japanese culture and traditions. The organization recognizes the growing interest in Japan and works tirelessly to create accessible, enjoyable events that allow the Boise community to experience authentic Japanese heritage. By hosting signature events like Idaho Japan Day alongside other cultural gatherings, the IJA creates spaces where people can learn, connect, and celebrate shared interests. The association also provides essential support to Japanese nationals by distributing local information, offering advice, and communicating important announcements from the Consulate office of Japan in Portland. Operating entirely through community generosity, the IJA maintains a free membership model and depends on donations and volunteer contributions to sustain its operations. This grassroots approach reflects the organization's commitment to accessibility and inclusivity—welcoming people of all backgrounds who wish to engage with Japanese culture and become part of the Boise community's cultural fabric.
