India Association of Manitoba
About India Association of Manitoba
Founded on October 30, 1965, when 36 nationals of India gathered at Dr. Atish Maniar's residence in Winnipeg, MB to celebrate Diwali, the India Association of Manitoba has evolved into a cornerstone of the region's multicultural fabric. What began as a small gathering of immigrants seeking cultural connection formally became the India Association of Manitoba just months later when members adopted a constitution and elected Dr. Maniar as founding president. The organization's mission centers on promoting harmony and integration among various religious and multi-cultural groups while preserving the rich traditions of Indian culture—encompassing dance, music, art, and language. Over nearly six decades, the association has grown from a single room at the International Centre to a fully incorporated organization with multiple cultural groups participating in its activities. The India Association's commitment to community extends beyond cultural preservation; members actively support communities worldwide affected by disasters and calamities, embodying a spirit of global compassion. Today, the organization stands as a bridge connecting Indo-Canadian families and other communities throughout Manitoba, fostering understanding and celebrating the contributions of Indian culture to the province. Through its programs, events, and partnerships, including the acclaimed Folklorama India Pavilion and the India Centre for Academic, Business and Community Excellence, the India Association continues its founding vision of creating harmony through cultural celebration and community engagement in Winnipeg.
