About Iota Chapter of Delta Gamma Sorority
Founded in 1873 at Lewis School in Oxford, Mississippi, Delta Gamma began as a club of mutual helpfulness created by three young women unable to return home for Christmas. Today, the Iota Chapter at the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign carries forward this legacy of sisterhood and service in the Urbana, IL community.
The fraternity's origins reflect a powerful commitment to making the world better through service and deep appreciation for individual members. The original pin featured the letter "H" for hope—a symbol that continues to inspire Delta Gamma women today. This foundation of hope, friendship, and social responsibility remains the driving force behind all chapter activities and member relationships.
Delta Gamma's Constitution, written by the Founders in 1873, articulates the organization's enduring values: fostering high ideals of friendship among women, promoting educational and cultural interests, creating a true sense of social responsibility, and developing the best qualities of character. These principles guide the Iota Chapter in building an inclusive community where every member feels valued and supported.
The Iota Chapter welcomes all women who share a commitment to these values and demonstrate good scholarship, strong character, and genuine desire to contribute to the fraternity's mission. Membership is open regardless of race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, or other characteristics. The chapter provides a lifetime of commitment and opportunity, creating bonds that extend well beyond college years. Through participation in the Iota Chapter, members join a global sisterhood of over 215 alumnae groups and 150 collegiate chapters, each dedicated to making a meaningful difference in their respective communities while upholding Delta Gamma's timeless vision of doing good.
