Japan-America Society of Greater Austin
About Japan-America Society of Greater Austin
Since its reformation in 2005, the Japan-America Society of Greater Austin has served as a vital grassroots bridge connecting the people of Austin, TX with Japanese culture and fostering genuine US-Japan relations. Originally founded in 1987 by Dr. Toshimatsu Matsumoto alongside the Austin-Oita Sister City Committee, JASGA re-emerged with renewed commitment to its core mission: strengthening cooperation and mutual understanding between Americans and Japanese through educational and cultural initiatives. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, JASGA is dedicated to expanding knowledge, increasing personal interaction, and facilitating meaningful discussions about important bilateral issues. The society recognizes that language and culture serve as essential bridges between nations, which is why it provides Japanese language instruction, cultural events, and educational opportunities accessible to children, adults, and lifelong learners throughout Austin and nationwide. JASGA's membership in the National Association of Japan-America Societies—one of only 38 such organizations across the country—reflects its standing within the premier network dedicated to public education about Japan. Through community-driven programming, cultural workshops, and language courses, JASGA creates spaces where Austin residents can engage authentically with Japanese traditions, build lasting friendships, and contribute to the broader mission of international understanding and peaceful relations between nations.
