About Katipunan, Filipino-American Association of Maryland
Founded in 1969 in a small room at the Fil-Am Building in Baltimore, Katipunan, Filipino-American Association of Maryland, Inc. has grown into a vital community organization serving Towson and the broader Maryland Filipino-American community. The organization's name carries deep historical significance, honoring the legacy of Filipino freedom fighters and embodying the spirit of "Filipinoism" that continues to guide its mission today.
What began as a gathering of twenty Filipinos committed to fostering social, cultural, and charitable needs has evolved into a thriving 501(c)(3) nonprofit with decades of tradition and community impact. Katipunan's founding members, including Ray Magno, Ferdie Rodriguez, and others, established traditions that endure today—from the beloved Anniversary and Debutante Ball to Philippine Independence Day celebrations during Filipino-American Friendship Week. The organization has consistently brought Filipino cultural performances, including the Bayanihan Dance Troupe and the UP Choir, to Maryland audiences while organizing community activities like Easter Egg Hunts, sports leagues, and holiday caroling.
Today, Katipunan remains committed to unifying the Filipino-American community of Towson and Maryland through meaningful programs that celebrate heritage while addressing contemporary needs. The organization's Merit Scholarship Program, charitable initiatives, and cultural events reflect its enduring dedication to enhancing the lives of Filipino-Americans and strengthening connections to their homeland. With free membership open to all, Katipunan continues its legacy as a welcoming community hub where Filipino culture thrives and relationships flourish.
