About LHBlacks

Rooted in Austin, Texas, LHBlacks emerged in June 2020 as a groundbreaking initiative within the University of Texas Austin's Butler School of Music. With the tagline "soul of the southwest," LHBlacks embodies a deep commitment to cultural pride and musical excellence.

The heart of LHBlacks lies in its mission to foster genuine community among Black students affiliated with the Butler School of Music at UT Austin. Members work collaboratively to highlight and celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black musicians, ensuring that their voices and talents receive the recognition they deserve. The organization creates a welcoming, inclusive space where Black and African American students can find belonging, support, and sisterhood within a traditionally underrepresented demographic in classical music.

Beyond internal community building, LHBlacks actively reaches outward to expand membership and recruitment within the Longhorn Band and Showband of the Southwest. The organization recognizes the importance of building a strong pipeline of talented Black musicians and advocates for greater representation across all levels of the music program. By connecting students, celebrating achievements, and fostering pride in Black musical traditions, LHBlacks transforms the landscape of the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas Austin.
