About New England Medical Association
The New England Medical Association (NEMA) is a not-for-profit membership organization building a powerful collective voice of Black physicians committed to achieving justice in medicine throughout the Boston, MA area and beyond. Founded on the principle that Black physicians deserve supportive communities free from isolation, NEMA creates spaces where medical professionals can heal, lead, and thrive together. The organization's mission centers on three core pillars: eliminating health disparities in New England's healthcare systems, building inclusive community among Black physicians and physicians in training, and advocating for systemic change that promotes equitable care. NEMA's unique approach goes beyond traditional professional development, offering transformative programs like Whitecoat Trauma—a healing space for navigating burnout and systemic harm—and Joy in Medicine, which celebrates rest and community as forms of resistance. The organization also hosts wellness initiatives such as Hoops and Healing, combining movement and connection with professional support. By fostering dialogue, mentorship, and collaborative action across the Boston medical community, NEMA empowers members to reshape how Black physicians and their patients interact with New England healthcare systems. Open to students, residents, physicians, and physician assistants, NEMA represents a movement centered on Black wellness, leadership, and collective power in medicine. Members become part of a community dedicated to driving meaningful healthcare change while supporting one another through the complexities of practicing medicine with integrity and purpose.
