About Notre Dame African Students Association

Based in Notre Dame, IN, the African Students Association represents a twenty-year legacy of student-led cultural and educational excellence at the University of Notre Dame. Guided by the powerful words of Frantz Fanon—"Each generation must, out of relative obscurity, discover its mission, fulfill it, or betray it"—the organization has evolved into a cornerstone community for African students and allies seeking to celebrate, learn, and grow together.

At its heart, the African Students Association creates a welcoming sanctuary for the Notre Dame community. The organization serves as a home away from home where Africans and those interested in African cultures can authentically share their heritage, build lasting friendships, and celebrate the continent's multifaceted identity. This inclusive approach has made the association a vital gathering space for students from diverse backgrounds who share a passion for African excellence and development.

The organization's mission encompasses four interconnected goals that reflect deep community commitment. Members work to strengthen unity among the African diaspora while fostering meaningful relationships with other campus organizations and the broader South Bend community. The association promotes the sharing of African culture and heritage through engaging programming while simultaneously fostering intellectual conversations about continental development and social justice. By providing academic and career support alongside service opportunities, the association empowers members to make tangible contributions to their communities.

What distinguishes the African Students Association is its commitment to active change-making. The organization deliberately works to dismantle harmful stereotypes while increasing opportunities for African development and Black emancipation. This dual focus on celebration and social consciousness attracts students who want to honor their heritage while contributing meaningfully to positive transformation, making it a dynamic force within the Notre Dame community.
