About oSTEM at Boston University

oSTEM at Boston University represents a vibrant community of LGBTQIA+ graduate students united by their passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Located in Boston, MA, this student organization emerged from a powerful vision in 2018 when a small group of BU graduate students recognized the need for dedicated resources and community support for LGBTQIA+ individuals pursuing STEM careers. What started as a gathering over cupcakes to celebrate International Day of LGBT+ People in STEM has blossomed into a thriving chapter of the national oSTEM Inc. organization.

The heart of oSTEM@BU lies in its mission to empower LGBTQIA+ graduate students to succeed personally, academically, and professionally by cultivating genuine community and promoting visibility within the STEM fields. The organization envisions a campus where LGBTQIA+ graduate students in Boston University's STEM community are empowered to achieve success in a safe, supportive environment that celebrates their diversity and honors their unique contributions to science and technology.

What distinguishes oSTEM@BU is its deep commitment to intersectionality and inclusion. The organization recognizes and honors the diverse intersecting identities and experiences of its members, including race, class, age, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression.
