Out Youth

Founded in April 1990 by two University of Texas graduate students, Out Youth emerged from research identifying critical gaps in mental health support for LGBTQ+ youth in Austin, Texas. What began as a small support group has evolved into a comprehensive 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization grounded in six core values: Sanctuary, Empowerment, Justice, Diversity, Community, and Integrity. Out Youth's mission centers on promoting the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being of sexual and gender minority youth so they can openly and safely explore their identities. The organization's vision extends beyond individual support to imagine a world where LGBTQ+ youth receive the support needed to develop positive self-images, empower themselves, and become active citizens in their communities. Serving Central Texas from its Austin headquarters, Out Youth has grown from meeting in living rooms and libraries to maintaining multiple facilities with dedicated spaces for counseling, community gathering, digital access, and resource libraries. The organization's commitment to creating sanctuary—a place where all individuals have the right to be themselves without fear—remains its defining characteristic after 35 years. Through collective action and community engagement, Out Youth continues to strengthen connections among youth, families, educators, and community members, building a more just society where everyone has equal opportunity to live openly and honestly.
