PFLAG Akron represents a powerful community of families, friends, allies, and LGBTQ individuals united by a shared commitment to equality and human dignity. Rooted in Akron, Ohio, our organization was founded in 1981 through the dedicated efforts of a local mother and a Kent State University professor, making us the oldest PFLAG chapter in Ohio. We envision a world where diversity is celebrated and every person is respected, valued, and affirmed in their authentic self. At the heart of our work is a deep respect for human dignity and an understanding that people come from diverse backgrounds, religions, and political beliefs. We meet people where they are without judgment, creating an inclusive community that welcomes everyone regardless of their starting point or perspective. Our confidential meetings provide a sanctuary where individuals can find understanding, connection, and empowerment in a safe environment. As part of the national PFLAG organization with a network of 400+ chapters, we draw on decades of collective wisdom and experience while remaining deeply connected to the unique needs of the Akron community. Our all-volunteer model reflects our genuine passion for this work and our belief in the transformative power of community support, education, and advocacy. Through our efforts in Greater Akron, we continue the legacy of those founders who recognized that love, acceptance, and solidarity can change lives and create meaningful social progress.
