Founded in 2010 by dedicated volunteers in Blairsville, GA, PFLAG Blairsville emerged from a recognized community need for local support and understanding around sexual orientation and gender identity. The chapter's roots trace back to Sandy Lane, who brought her experience as a longtime PFLAG volunteer and former state chair from New Mexico to the North Georgia Mountains, where she recognized the pressing need for this vital resource. What began as monthly meetings has grown into a thriving community organization that now serves as a beacon of hope and acceptance across Blairsville and surrounding areas of North Georgia, Western North Carolina, and Eastern Tennessee. PFLAG Blairsville is built on the foundational belief that strength comes from diversity and that every person deserves to live authentically and safely. The organization's members—LGBTQ individuals, parents, siblings, friends, and allies—stand ready to listen, share experiences, and work toward meaningful change. Over the years, PFLAG Blairsville has evolved from a grassroots support group into an influential advocate for community transformation, partnering with schools, businesses, and faith communities to create more loving and accepting environments. The chapter has marched in Pride parades, educated school counselors on creating safe learning spaces, and responded compassionately to national tragedies affecting the LGBTQ community. Operating as an independent nonprofit with no religious or political affiliations, PFLAG Blairsville remains committed to its original mission: helping LGBTQ persons, their families, and allies journey toward understanding, acceptance, and full equality in a society that respects human diversity.
