PFLAG Detroit is a community-centered organization rooted in the powerful belief that families thrive when they embrace and celebrate their LGBTQ+ members. Serving Troy, Michigan and the broader Detroit region, PFLAG Detroit was born from the lived experiences of parents who initially struggled to reconcile their expectations with the reality of their children's identities. What began as a small group of parents sharing their stories has evolved into a vibrant community of parents, LGBTQ+ individuals, relatives, friends, and allies working together toward a vision of an equitable and inclusive world. The organization's foundation rests on authentic relationships and mutual support—parents find reassurance and connection with other parents who have walked similar paths, LGBTQ+ individuals discover community and validation among peers, and allies develop deeper understanding through listening to genuine human stories. Operating under core values of accountability, bravery, community collaboration, inclusivity, and growth, PFLAG Detroit creates spaces where vulnerability is honored and challenging conversations happen with compassion. The organization recognizes that love and acceptance save LGBTQ+ lives, that families grow resilient when they support their LGBTQ+ children, and that healing occurs when families reconnect with understanding. For nearly four decades, PFLAG Detroit has remained steadfast in its commitment to combating hate, discrimination, and violence while advancing the fundamental goal of equal rights for all.
