Founded in the early 1990s by Frieda Saraga and her son Scott, the organization emerged during a time when Jacksonville offered few welcoming spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals and virtually no legal protections. Despite facing significant adversity, including death threats and hate calls, the founders persisted in building a safe community where people could find support, connection, and affirmation. Over three decades, PFLAG Jacksonville has grown from small monthly meetings held in secure, neutral locations to a thriving organization serving countless individuals, families, and allies. The chapter's mission centers on creating a caring, just, and affirming world where every LGBTQ+ person is safe, celebrated, empowered, and loved. Today, PFLAG Jacksonville operates as part of a national network of nearly 400 chapters with over 325,000 members and supporters dedicated to celebrating diversity and respecting all people regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
