About Portuguese Historical & Cultural Society

Founded in 1979 by visionary community members Lorraine Perry D'Alessandro, Joe D'Alessandro, and Evelyn Perry Nordeste, the Portuguese Historical & Cultural Society emerged from a pivotal moment in Sacramento, California's development. As the city expanded rapidly during the 1960s and 1970s, the founders recognized the importance of preserving the Portuguese-American stories and contributions that might otherwise be lost to history. Originally established as the Sacramento Portuguese-American Historical Committee, the organization evolved into a vital cultural institution dedicated to maintaining the link between community members and their ethnic past. The society operates as a congenial gathering place where individuals of Portuguese descent can celebrate their heritage, share experiences, and pass cultural traditions to future generations. Rooted in Sacramento's Riverside-Pocket neighborhood, the Portuguese Historical & Cultural Society reflects the resilience and legacy of Portuguese families who helped shape the region during times of significant change. Today, the organization continues its founding mission by creating inclusive spaces for cultural expression, historical education, and community connection. Through scholarships, cultural programming, and historical preservation efforts, the Portuguese Historical & Cultural Society honors the Portuguese-American experience while strengthening the social fabric of Sacramento.
