About PROMO
For over 35 years, PROMO has served as Missouri's committed voice for LGBTQ equality and justice, rooted in the St. Louis, MO community. Born from grassroots activism following the 1986 Bowers v. Hardwick Supreme Court decision, PROMO evolved from its origins as People Aligned for Change and Equality (PACE) and the Privacy Rights Education Project (PREP) to become a focused, powerful force centered entirely on advancing LGBTQ rights and safety throughout the state.
PROMO's vision reflects a deep commitment to creating a Missouri where every LGBTQ person—regardless of demographic, race, ethnicity, zip code, or life experience—is valued and thriving. The organization confronts systemic inequities head-on, working to liberate the full spectrum of the LGBTQ community from discrimination and oppression. What distinguishes PROMO is its integrated approach: mobilizing diverse Missourians from all backgrounds, building visible and supportive communities, and ensuring LGBTQ voices are heard in halls of power and neighborhood organizations alike.
Based in St. Louis, PROMO recognizes that real change happens when local communities hold strong and create sustainable shifts that ripple across the entire state. The organization accepts practicum students and interns, investing in the next generation of LGBTQ advocates and allies. Through volunteer opportunities, community education, and partnership with local organizations, PROMO empowers Missourians to become active participants in the democratic process while working collectively toward equal protection under the law for all LGBTQ people.
