Proud Haven was created in Pittsburgh, PA to address a national and local crisis affecting LGBTQIA+ youth experiencing homelessness. The organization's mission centers on providing a safe shelter and comprehensive support for young people ages 18-25 who face unique barriers to traditional services. Many LGBTQIA+ youth become homeless due to family rejection related to their sexual orientation or gender identity, while others flee harassment and violence at school or in their neighborhoods. Once homeless, these youth face devastating health consequences, psychological trauma, hunger, and educational disruption without adequate support systems. Proud Haven's founders recognized that identity-based discrimination within mainstream shelter systems left LGBTQIA+ youth without safe, affirming options. Since its inception in 2012, Proud Haven has grown into a dedicated advocacy and service organization committed to improving quality of life for the entire LGBTQIA+ population. The organization provides not just shelter connections but emotional support and resources that empower youth to develop the confidence and skills needed for independent adulthood.
