San Antonio Black Lawyers Association
About San Antonio Black Lawyers Association
Founded in 1979 by a dedicated group of seventeen African-American attorneys, the San Antonio Black Lawyers Association has grown into an integral part of the legal community serving the greater San Antonio, Texas area. Born from the civil rights movement and a commitment to justice, SABLA emerged from conversations about the lack of representation of African-American attorneys in Bexar County courts. The organization's founding members, including Attorney Peggy W. Jones and Attorney Clarence McGowan, established a mission rooted in unity, adequate representation, and sound legal information for the Black community of San Antonio. Today, SABLA continues that legacy by recognizing the unique role lawyers play in addressing community problems, identifying needs, and helping achieve collective goals. The association is committed to promoting, increasing, and supporting the presence of Black lawyers throughout the San Antonio region, ensuring that citizens seeking legal representation have access to diverse and qualified professionals. SABLA's values remain grounded in the original preamble established by its founders, which emphasizes the provision of mechanisms to resolve community concerns and fulfill the aspirations of San Antonio residents. With an ever-growing membership and expanding leadership team, the organization constantly seeks innovative ways to benefit the citizens of San Antonio while advocating for social justice and equality within the legal profession. SABLA stands as a testament to the power of collective action and professional collaboration in creating meaningful change.
