Founded on January 14, 1984, the San Diego Indian American Society emerged from the vision of Professor M.C. 'Madhu' Madhavan and a dedicated group of community leaders including the Waney, Wadia, and Singh families who shared a commitment to cultural exchange and humanitarian service. This community-rooted organization in San Diego, CA was established with four core objectives: creating the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Scholarship to recognize Gandhi's contributions to humanity while supporting local high school graduates; undertaking meaningful service projects that benefit both people in India and the San Diego community; honoring individuals whose service exemplifies excellence in any field; and strengthening the vital relationship between India and the United States. Over the decades, the San Diego Indian American Society has built a strong reputation as a bridge between cultures, fostering understanding and cooperation through educational support and community engagement. The organization's founders understood that lasting social change comes through education, recognition, and genuine human connection. Today, the Society continues this legacy by maintaining its tax-exempt status and directing resources toward programs that make a tangible difference in people's lives.
