About Swedish Women’s Educational Association Houston
SWEA Houston represents a chapter of SWEA International, a global organization dedicated to protecting and promoting Swedish language, culture, and traditions among women living abroad. Established in 2003 in Houston, TX, this community-driven organization has grown to include approximately 45 members of diverse ages from Houston and the surrounding region. The chapter is rooted in the earlier SVEA of Texas organization (1980-2003), demonstrating a long-standing commitment to serving Swedish women in the area. As part of the MAME region—encompassing nine departments from Austin and Dallas to Chicago, Colorado, Minnesota, and Toronto—SWEA Houston connects with a broader international network of 6,000 members worldwide. The organization's mission centers on fostering meaningful relationships among Swedish women while celebrating their shared cultural heritage through regular activities such as walks, book clubs, lunches, cultural meetings, and digital webinars. Members come together to observe Swedish holidays and maintain connections to Swedish traditions in an increasingly globalized world. SWEA Houston provides Houston residents with a welcoming community where Swedish language and culture remain central to the experience, creating lasting friendships and cultural continuity for women who value their Swedish identity.
