In 2024, Mayor Ron Jensen commissioned City Manager Bill Hills with an unprecedented initiative: create Grand Prairie’s first-ever Black History Month Program. Mr. Hills collaborated with Councilwoman Bessye Adams and a dynamic group of community leaders to form the Grand Prairie Black History Commission—a collective of leaders, pastors, business owners, and residents committed to celebrating Black excellence in the city of Grand Prairie. The result? A vibrant month-long celebration that quickly became one of Grand Prairie’s most treasured cultural events. Drawing attendees from near and far for a multi-event series, Grand Prairie set the bar high creating the largest DFW Black History celebration.
