About The Leonardo da Vinci Society
Founded in 1949 by Lillian Dandini, Ruth D'Anneo, and Maria Teresa Piccirillo, The Leonardo da Vinci Society emerged from a vision to promote broader appreciation of Italian contributions to art, literature, and culture within the San Francisco community. The organization's founders selected the name of the Renaissance universal man to symbolize the richness and diversity of Italian cultural achievement. The first formal event, held in May 1951 at the de Young Museum, showcased Italian handicrafts and featured the Minetti Student Symphony Orchestra, establishing a tradition of excellence that continues today.
As a non-profit, non-political organization based in San Francisco, California, the Society has built a distinguished history of presenting cultural experiences that celebrate what makes Italian heritage unique and valuable to American life. The organization's commitment extends beyond historical appreciation to contemporary recognition, with the Leonardo Awards program honoring young Italian and Italian-American researchers and entrepreneurs advancing knowledge in science and technology.
