About UCLA Association of Chinese Americans
Founded in 1982 by five visionary students—Keith Lee, Myrna Ling, Rena Lum, Katherine Shintaku, and Valerie Soe—the Association of Chinese Americans at UCLA in Los Angeles represents over four decades of dedicated community building and cultural celebration. What began as a small group of Chinese American students seeking to explore their roots has evolved into one of the largest student-run organizations on the UCLA campus, with a thriving membership that exceeds 500 students each year.
At its heart, ACA is driven by a mission to serve as a gathering place where Chinese American students can authentically connect with one another while celebrating their bicultural identity. The organization recognizes the unique experiences of those navigating between two cultures and provides programming specifically designed to honor and explore Chinese American heritage, history, and contemporary experiences. Rather than prescribing narrow definitions of cultural identity, ACA embraces the complexity and diversity within the Chinese American community.
Based in Los Angeles, ACA extends its impact beyond campus boundaries, strengthening connections within the broader community and fostering awareness about Chinese American culture and identity. The organization maintains an active presence across multiple platforms, including social media and regular community events, making it accessible to students and alumni alike. Through authentic relationships, educational initiatives, and shared experiences, ACA continues the legacy established by its founders—creating a supportive network where members feel valued, represented, and empowered to explore who they are while contributing meaningfully to their campus and community.
