Unico Scranton
About Unico Scranton
Since its formation in 1955, Unico Scranton has served as a cornerstone of community service and Italian American heritage in Dunmore, PA. What began as a fledgling organization guided by a unique philosophy—placing community service before personal interests—has evolved into the largest UNICO chapter nationwide. The organization's founders envisioned bringing together Italian Americans with a shared commitment to civic responsibility and cultural pride, believing that meaningful change comes through sacrifice and dedication to others rather than personal gain. Over more than half a century, Unico Scranton has consistently demonstrated this philosophy through its thoughtful planning of activities that strengthen community bonds and celebrate Italian American contributions to American society. The chapter takes pride in uniting local residents with UNICO National's broader mission of supporting charitable, scientific, cultural, educational, and literary endeavors. In Dunmore and throughout the region, members embody the organization's core values of Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity, and Opportunity. The name UNICO itself—Italian for 'unique' or 'one of a kind'—reflects the organization's distinctive approach to service. Today, Unico Scranton remains deeply connected to the Dunmore community, honoring its heritage while actively working to ensure that Italian American culture and values continue to enrich local life for generations to come.
