Women in Aerospace for Leadership and Development (WIALD) emerged from a pivotal moment at the University of Texas at Austin when women's enrollment in the undergraduate Aerospace Engineering program reached historic lows. In 2009, a dedicated group of women engineers, supported by faculty advisors and the Women in Engineering Program, founded WIALD to transform the landscape for female students pursuing aerospace and engineering careers in Austin, Texas.
At its heart, WIALD is a community-driven student organization committed to making engineering education engaging, exciting, and personally rewarding. The organization recognizes that women thrive when they have access to mentorship, peer support, and opportunities to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges. Rather than viewing engineering as a solitary academic pursuit, WIALD creates a collaborative environment where women can develop confidence, build professional networks, and discover their potential as future aerospace leaders.
What distinguishes WIALD is its commitment to experiential learning combined with intentional community building. Each year, the organization selects ambitious hands-on projects that push members beyond the classroom—from launching payloads to space and sending weather balloons into the upper atmosphere to designing sophisticated autonomous systems. These projects serve as vehicles for both technical skill development and relationship building among members who share common goals and aspirations.
Serving the Austin engineering community since 2009, WIALD has grown into a vital support system for women navigating aerospace and engineering disciplines. The organization meets weekly on Wednesdays, creating a consistent touchpoint for members to connect, collaborate, and celebrate their achievements. By fostering an inclusive culture where women support each other's growth and success, WIALD continues its mission of retaining talented women in engineering while inspiring future generations to pursue careers in aerospace and related technical fields.
