About Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association
Founded in 1977, the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association emerged from a vision of pioneering Miami, FL lawyers who recognized that meaningful inclusion in the legal community required collective action and unified effort. Originally established as The Black Lawyers Association by visionary founders including Harold Fields, George Knox, Harold Long, Jesse McCrary, Ralph Person, Clinton Pitts, and H.T. Smith, the organization has profoundly shaped the legal, civic, and political landscape of Miami-Dade County for nearly five decades. In 2003, the association formally renamed itself to honor Judge Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr., recognizing his outstanding contributions to the community. Beyond professional advocacy, the organization demonstrates deep commitment to community development through financial assistance and mentoring programs for law and undergraduate students, youth mentoring initiatives with elementary and junior high school students, and oratorical contests for high school students. The association's mission centers on promoting equal access, equal opportunity, and equal justice within the legal system while articulating the goals and objectives of Black lawyers in Miami-Dade County. Today, the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association continues this legacy of excellence and inclusion, serving as a vital community resource that empowers legal professionals while advancing social justice and professional integrity throughout Miami and surrounding areas.
