About Yukon Aboriginal Women's Council

Since 1974, the Yukon Aboriginal Women's Council (YAWC) has been a cornerstone of Indigenous community support in Whitehorse, Yukon, and Northern British Columbia. Founded by pioneering women who sought meaningful participation in decision-making processes affecting Native communities, YAWC has evolved into a comprehensive non-profit society committed to building resilient, robust communities through empowerment and celebration of Indigenous women's achievements. The organization's mission centers on fostering social, economic, cultural, and political well-being while honoring and preserving Indigenous cultures and values. Operating from a foundation of trust, collaboration, and compassionate leadership, YAWC recognizes the inherent civil and human rights of Indigenous women, girls, and gender diverse people. The organization's holistic approach integrates traditional First Nation protocols, spirituality, and ways of knowing alongside contemporary support services. Guided by a volunteer board comprising elders, youth, and community directors, YAWC maintains deep connections to the land and communities it serves. Today, the organization continues its legacy of advocacy and empowerment by providing healing resources, learning opportunities, and platforms for celebrating Indigenous women's leadership roles and contributions. For over 50 years, YAWC in Whitehorse has remained a trusted partner and advocate, dedicated to enhancing the lives of Indigenous women and their families through culturally grounded, community-centered initiatives.
